Lesson 6 Appropriateness of Assessment Methods

After setting up the learning targets clearly, we can now identify and determine the appropriate assessment procedures. Below are the five general categories of assessment instruments.

  1. Written Response. These instruments are the very common objective tests, essays and examinations we administered to assess various levels of hierarchy of educational objectives. Both lower and higher order thinking skills can be assessed using written res ponse depending on how we construct and structure our questions.
  2. Product Rating Scales. Teachers use product rating scales in assessing outputs like book report, maps, charts, diagrams, notebooks, etc. To develop a product rating scale for various products in education, teachers need to have prototype or sample products from his/her students over the span of years he/she is teaching.
  3. Performance Test. In performance tests, teachers usually used performance checklist consisting of enumerated behaviors to make up a certain type of performance. It is used to determine whether or not an individual shown the enlisted particular behavior during the conduct of the assessment.
  4. Oral Questioning. It is an appropriate assessment to use when student’s stock knowledge and ability to communicate ideas are to be assessed.
  5. Observation and Self-Report. Observation Reports are particular to teachers’ tasks in recording notable performances of children, it can be in the form of tally sheet or anecdotal record. Self-report meanwhile, are instruments for the learners themselves, they are the ones who will rate themselves of how often they are showing the stated behavior.
