Lesson 7 Properties of Assessment Methods
The quality of assessment results relies on how technically sound and appropriate the assessment methods used are. In this lesson we’ll be discussing the basic properties assessment instruments should posses in order to become of good quality.
- Validity is defined as the appropriateness, correctness, meaningfulness and usefulness of an assessment method used. Simply put, a test or any form of assessment is valid when it measures what it intends to measure.
- Reliability of an assessment method refers to the consistency of its results. A test is reliable when the results it generates is consistent to a group of students at any particular period of time, place or condition – given of course the position relation to the instructional process is held constant.
- Fairness should always be at highest level possible. To do so, students of course must first be informed of the what, when, why and how of the assessment method to be given to them. It also implies freedom from stereotyping, bias and any prejudice.
- Practicality and Efficiency refers to the assessment procedure where the teacher is most familiar with and is implementable.
- Ethics in Assessment. In order for the teachers to abide with the ethical principles to be observed in giving assessment, they should keep in mind the question “Will any physical, emotional or psychological harm come to anyone before, during and after the assessment process?”
